Slumdog ringtone - Salim's phone.

Here's the ringtone in question. The one on Salim's phone when Jamaal calls on the last question and Latika answers. The ringtone actually is a number from AR Rahman's earlier movie Swades.

Rab ne bana di jodi. I curse and she yawns.

Disaster. I couldn't sum it up more efficiently and neatly. How did the movie manage to garner the hype that it did. Some media persons must have been on a payroll. One shouldn't expect the makers of Tashan to come up with anything better and Adi made sure he didn't. What a pointless and story less mess. Take SRK out and you have yourself a perfect cup of espresso(minus coffee and milk). Like every other disaster this movie heads from the start to the same place all other movies of its class go, to the movie-shredder( i hope to god somebody invents it and places it in all theatres countrywide.) Not for a nanosecond did I feel connected with the movie. Rab ne.. seems to move ahead of everybody including audiences. No point in dissecting the first/second halves. Both are mundane and totally avoidable. Music is below average and songs dont gel with the movie at all. Dialogues seem to have been copy-pasted from other SRK movies. I have no idea why the story was based in Amritsar and had the so-out-of-original-ideas Punjabi undertone with all the 'Hello- ji , this ji and that ji'. Rab ne.. feels like the Punjabi tarka overcooked, burnt and re heated a hundred times.

SRK looks too old and his face a bit too bony with all the bones sticking out. He'd do good to retire completely from typical romantic stories and follow Aamir Khan. Let his ego decide.

I saw 'Pineapple Express' yesterday and I loved Seth Rogan.Hollywood is getting better everyday in each genre and we are in complete shit to say the least.

I'll rate Rab ne when i die and meet Rab ji and ask him if he did made this Adi Chopra jodi.
Did we all hear a 'No' from somewhere............

Slumdog Millionaire - Danny Boyle

What I discovered three years ago will be discovered by many in 2009 , that Danny Boyle is a genius. He recently concluded the shooting of Slumdog Millionaire in Mumbai with a budget of just $5 million. It gained a strong buzz after getting screened at some film fests. It put to rest Danny's fear that the film would have trouble finding distributors in North America and would go straight to DVD. That would have been a shame.

The movie has a beginning in Hindi because it was hard to find child actors who could speak fluent English. To make it more acceptable to English audiences exciting subtitles were later added. The director also befriended curious onlookers while shooting to control the crowds.

In 2004 I was surfing Imdb when I recalled 'Life less ordinary' the Cameron Diaz flick which at that time I thought was very provocative. So I went to the directors page ( Danny Boyle) and decided to give my own theory of following directors a try. So I decided to download Millions (2004).

Millions is a British movie about a 7 yr old boy in London who decides to help others after he discovers a bag full of Pounds near his house. He is often visited by Saints ( of biblical and later periods) . They encourage him to continue his good work. Unlike his elder brother who is a typical brat and decides to spend newly found cash on girls, he donates enough to make people suspicious. Millions has a very decent story and strong ending. No doubt it was a "Drop everything you are doing and go see it" movie. I recommend it 130.577

Sunshine was directed by Danny Boyle in 2007. I downloaded it too and it turned out to be as good as Millions. Sunshine is a story set in future when our Sun is dying after burning much of its hydrogen fuel. A mission is sent to recharge the sun and make it life-supporting again. What all happens on the team's journey to Sun is worth my shutting up and letting you enjoy the flick. Some scenes depicting the Sun are totally awesome. Typical British movie with English actors.
I recommend it a 124.78 %

Slumdog millionaire (2008) - Frankly It has generated too much excitement for even Boyle. Nobody expected it to do so well. It has won many awards so far and has been nominated for four Golden Globes. That doesn't matter to me actually. One Critic says "What I feel for this movie isn't just admiration, it's mad love." Since I cant find a torrent for Slumdog Millionaire I haven't seen it yet. Only thing I can say is 'Dying to see this one'.

Its a story which revolves around a Mumbai slum boy Jamal Malik who gets to the last question in the millionaire quiz show and is taken away by cops who suspect Jamal has cheated. Based on the book ' Q and A ' by Vikas Swarup. see Slumdog Millionaire reviews

As good as the Directors

Every Tom Cruise movie isn't always that hot and Jim Carry isnt always that funny. The biggest mistake a movie goer makes is to follow the Actor. As far as my experience goes you have to follow the Directors. They are the Gods of Hollywood. Follow the Directors. It is the easiest way to decide which movie to see on the weekend. If the Director's last movie was critically acclaimed, chances are - He's back with good stuff.

I have seen every full length movie made by Steven Spielberg and many others and It was worth the effort. Not many Indians bother to look up the movie director much less remember his last works. If you saw
Finding Nemo and remembered Andrew Stanton, Wall-e should be in your ' have seen - loved it list '. If not, your loss. Wall-e is considered the best Animated movie ever. It sits pretty at the 34th place on the IMdb Top 250 movies ever.

A critic said of Wall-e "...a major visionary work, a sci-fi parable of astonishing scope and depth..." If you haven't seen Wall-e (for starters)I suggest you drop everything you are doing and go see it. See critical reviews of Wall-e

The Misery of me

It was the magnetism of 'Tom Cruise' in 'Interview with a vampire' or the emotional 'Welcome home - Roxy Carmichael' which made me an avid Hollywood buff. Whatever it was, I am deeply thankful to it for I am no longer an average Indian who goes out to see every other English movie which has a mind blowing trailor showing more skin than Basic Instinct and is shown twenty times every half an hour. I am also thankful for it has opened me up to an unexplored world of fantastic unthinkable stories with life changing characters. Never have I been in more awe of what a human is capable of than when I see a movie like Shawshank Redemption, often asking myself "how can a human achieve this ?" Another movie might answer this, I suppose.

I remember going to a matinee show of a Salman Khan's movie along with couple of school friends about a zillion years ago. Twenty minutes into the story and I found myself looking at other people sitting there to see if something is worth watching , like a hot girl. Disappointed, I left the theatre with a mild headache and cursing Salman and the stupid director for making such a pointless movie with no story. I vowed to end my hindi movie adventures there and then. It wasn't sudden you know, there were many instances when I sat down to see a flick and had to leave it midway because it was boring as hell. Nothing new ever came out of bollywood ,save maybe ten so far in fifteen years.
